Palm oil is the world’s second most consumed edible oil and accounts for 30% of the global consumable oil market. Whilst it is a component in both edible and non-edible products, approximately 90% of its usage is found in a variety of food products.
In recent years, global demand has increased significantly and a recent study has shown that 10-15% of products in a typical grocery store contain some form of palm oil. Crude Palm Oil (CPO) when refined (RBD Palm Olein) is also extremely popular for frying and cooking.
Amongst its many properties, Palm oil also has a high solid glyceride content – lending it a desirable consistency with hydrogenation. It has thus become a popular choice in manufactured food products.
